Definitely. I’ve put a cup of bleach in there and filled with water, let it sit for a few days. Helped a little. Tried dumping the rest of our dish soap in there and filling it with water. Baking powder in the box. RV tank treatment. End of the day, the shit box still smells like a Shit box.

next closest place is ~15 miles away. Went there today. I graduated from a janitor to a telecom tech so the poop doesn’t scare me as much as the driving.

I recognize that rock! Cottonwood Improvement District?

I turn my lockdown nut to the "halfway" position when I dump, holds it on a little tighter and helps limit the leakage.

I suspect that people don't change the rubber gasket on the Selways nearly as often as they ought to. Having used the one that Tbatt most likely had his incident with.... that one is definitely at that point.

Its totally gross and not for the squeemish.... but I actually prefer one like the one at Split Mountain where its just a glory hole that you dump it all in. No hose needed.

I go back and forth on which I prefer with Selway or Johnny Partner. Do I prefer a lid that can be a little too loose or a lid that sometimes is very hard to get off? I mean...if you have to bring a crow bar on a trip to get a lid off...is that really what you want?

Seems as if it should screw on . More like a stepped fitting than threads but a combo would be better. Mine is very crude when done and to my eye looks a little suspect. Dunno if it would stay intact in a terrible shake down in the ledge hole? Ugh that would be very yukky lol

Threaded lids sound great till some sand gets in the threads and locks the lid on. The o-ring with the snap clamp ring of the Johnny Partner is certainly secure. Over time they can get galled up and can need some persuasion with a pry bar after a lot of use.

I've never done a detailed check, but I would hope that the toilet seat (and properly tightened straps) makes enough contact with the sealing lid on the Selway that it would prevent the yukky hypothetical delidding in a violent flip situation. Gonna be a mess getting flipped on its lid....but hopefully would never come open.

Good eye!

EM I'm surprised you couldn't smell my boat all the way from your dory beach. I certainly could when I was sleeping on my drop hatch ~18" away from the first full tank.

Have no real experience and only done a trip of 4. We have 9 for 8 days? Is it going to be gross and full? I have no idea lol but would rather buy a tank than have it too full???
We had a seven day with 9 people. I switched out the tank on day 5. it still had a lot of room and might have lasted the whole trip but was getting to heavy for my liking. I reckon if you have 2 tanks you should be good for 8 days with 9 people. One tank seems risky.

so for those who are proposing the 5 gallon bucket replacement tank, how do you clean the 5 gallon bucket? I know you can use a scat machine in ID but elswhere I am not sure what you would do. Could you put a wag bag in there?

Just line it with a heavy duty garbage bag (or 2) and toss that in the garbage when you get home. If the landfill is good enough for diapers, it's good enough for my turds, as well.

I know a couple of guys that always bring the groover ( a Selway ) on multi days with a group that I run with. Their spiel is that if you keep the TP out of the system it’s good for another 20 hits at least. And what’s up with the covering up the turd pile with TP? Stupid waste of groover space but there is someone on every trip that does it. I work construction and there is some one on every job site that does the same. WTF. What’s the logic behind this? I would really like to know WTF they are thinking.
Is the TP strata akin to a dog kicking dirt after they poop?

Some people just can't handle seeing a pile of turds in a Groover... so they instead decide to make a turd and TP lasagna in the groover instead. I don't get it either... but on some trips it feels like 75% of the trip does it and it REALLY impacts how fast the groover fills.
And a correspondingly large amount of TP use.

@jamesthomas the jobsite comment had me rolling! I'm in construction and you are spot on... I also don't understand the asshat that puts the TP in the urinal in the temp shitters. I will say though that if they just got serviced that a little lily pad helps to break the surface tension to prevent blue smurf juice splash back...

I’m new to the Selway groover and was wondering if you ever need to tighten the screws for the lid? When we first got it, we could hardly put the lid on. After a week long trip, the lid easily goes on and the lockdown nut hardly engages. After I emptied it, I filled with bleach water and shook it around, and I noticed some of the water leaking from the lid. I’m a bit worried about that. I’m hoping to take the lid off and air out the tank (but it will stink up our neighborhood right now) and hope the seal expands a bit.
