I’m literally about to clean mine out following a 6-day, 9 person Hells Canyon Trip. It could have gone 2 more days easy.

But, these are always hard calculations. Some folks just don’t go often the first few days. 9 people for 8 days would make me bring a second tank based on numbers alone. It would be very close. Pushing things around with a stick isn’t super fun lol

Plan on one pint per person per day and add a little extra capacity just in case, because what are you going to do if it gets full?

The folks who publish the guide for groovers on the Rogue say the Selway is 60 user-days. Nine people for eight days is 72 user days. Get a second inner tank or a second groover even if it's just an old-school rocket box.

 

We did 8 days with 9 people (72 user days) and it was very full. We were doing lots of shakedowns to settle it and that is about as full as I'd ever want.

Take a metal coffee can and punch holes in the sides for air flow and burn your TP. It'll allow you to fit more actual turds, and make the dump process easier. The only clogs I've ever gotten in the drain out tube were from huge clumps of TP. First pass is okay to go in the groover, but burn the rest.

 

A 5 gallon bucket with a gamma seal lid fits inside the selway. You can use that for your second tank so you don’t have to buy one for $200.

If 4 of the 9 are kids.... I think you'll be fine with one tank. I did a 20 person 3 night 4 day Lodore trip earlier this year but 12 of the participants were kids from 9 to 14 and , incredibly, we only used one Ecosafe tank.

Keep people from overusing toilet paper and you should be fine. I've seen tanks fill up in two days from people doing "courtesy covers" because they don't like to look at the turds or something.

It never hurts to have a spare tank though. It is often easier to clean two 2/3 full tanks then one that is brimming over.

 

Did 11 adults, 5 nights and had room to spare.

 

it never hurts to have an extra rocket box or even a couple wag bags just in case and the wag bags with a 5 gal. bucket at lunch during the day can also take some space out of the main groover

 

So when you just supplement the groover with a bag or two in a bucket your not really breaking any rules or should that be on the down low? I guess iam confused why the groover is better than bags and a bucket ? Never thought about it. Just thought must rules say a groover unless kayak self support? (First main trip)

 

I know a couple of guys that always bring the groover ( a Selway ) on multi days with a group that I run with. Their spiel is that if you keep the TP out of the system it’s good for another 20 hits at least. And what’s up with the covering up the turd pile with TP? Stupid waste of groover space but there is someone on every trip that does it. I work construction and there is some one on every job site that does the same. WTF. What’s the logic behind this? I would really like to know WTF they are thinking.

Some people just can't handle seeing a pile of turds in a Groover... so they instead decide to make a turd and TP lasagna in the groover instead. I don't get it either... but on some trips it feels like 75% of the trip does it and it REALLY impacts how fast the groover fills.

And a correspondingly large amount of TP use.

 

Out of sight out of mind I guess lol.I have a few buckets and gammas from beekeeping stuff so maybe that’s the insurance. If it’ll fit in there as if it was a tank.,,oh wait…you gotta clean it ! Or do you guys chuck them at the end? That’s a gnarly clean up. Call that hep -c groover tech. I’ll just buy a tank maybe and change it half way and be a great guy for having such a clean set up . Going to be more girls than boys so they will appreciate it . Local had some but let’s see how much. Rafting is getting expensive lol

 

I've got 70 plus user days in a Selway. It was pretty full. When the math is close you can usually omit the launch day in the calculations.
Burning tp this time of year doesn't seem like a great idea...

In a fresh Porta potty a "raft" of tp helps prevent a blue butt. Perhaps that's what's going on?

 

Nope. Always happens after the “stalagmite” starts to form at the end of the week.

 

when I'm doing a solo 2-3 day trip I'll bring a groover, and also a couple wag bags. These can be tossed into the regular garbage at the end of a trip, This allows me to not have to clean out a 3 day deposit. By bringing both I am prepared for the ranger just in case I need to show a real system. I've always been somewhat sketchy of the wag bag thing but solo I'm okay with it and it will pass inspection anyway. It is also handy at lunch so I do'nt have to dig out the groover. All info I have seen on the wag bag say you can throw-away in trash. I will usually just keep separate from other trash until the end of the trip then toss all the garbage together. So it is... tis it.

If you dump a few cups of water (not a lot) on it in the final two days of pack up it will be fine. It lets the tp compact more than you would expect .

 

Still wasted space. And the poo/tp lasagna take is priceless. Thanks for that.

We have found single ply tp helps with volume. Significantly less tp is used when we switch to single ply.

Single ply is not as popular as the nice stuff but no ine really says anything when we put it out.

As mentioned above the volume significantly increases after day 3/4 with most groups so take that into consideration too.

We use the Jonny partner. With kids we have a lot more volume compared to calculations. With adults it can fill up fast.

If you are the dedicated groover in your group just get a 2nd tank. You will be using it forever - and need more volume as your kids grow up.
