was that a haiku, farp? Nice work. The word here is sublimation...ice turing into water vapor directly without a liquid phase. Common along the front range at least, where the dry wind occasionally sweeps in from the planes and carries with it the snow. There's a Ute word for it that I can't remember which means "snow eater".

Three "reservoirs" need to fill before runoff begins:
1) The soil moisture reservoir.
2) Ongoing evapotranspiration as the growing season kicks off.
3) Ground water storage.
You'd be suprised, these water sinks actually account for a pretty huge volume of water. We'll get there soon!

Sorry guys and gals. Too much Lord of the Rings this winter. The indian word is Chinook (Shin-ook) and there is another word for downsloping winds Zepher. Prior to the Rockies the Zephers were Denver's minor league baseball team. Anyway I heard this morning that the wind has been bad this year. I don't think we're going to see five on the rock.
