Curious on access, depth and how it surfs. Seen it from 70 but never been. Is it easy surf, glass wave, rough hole or make no mistakes retentive. Get the impression it may be fast and kind of like south canyon.

In a nutshell, the access is questionable if not illegal (it's changed a bit in the last few years), it is shallow at lower levels and deeper at higher levels (not sure what those levels are), at the highest flows I've seen it's a sweet green wave but tricky to get on, I don't think it's ever very sticky and there is a huge pool behind it, nice wave/hole at normal levels. Usually not like South Canyon, but can be at higher levels.

The backstory... around 1998 or 1999 three 16/17 year olds drove to Plateau Creek one afternoon (as they had all week), and did a little park and play at the tail end of a temporary culvert. Turns out the contractor that placed the culvert was a bit unhappy that we were cartwheeling the shit out of that feature (and we were a bit unhappy that we couldn't play in Plateau Creek even though he could pipe the entire flow), and the contractor kicked us out. If we weren't in high school we might have argued more, but instead, we packed up and drove to the cameo dam for some weird reason. We could see the flow in the 7th gate (at that time, it's now the 6th gate due to the fish ladder in the 1st gate), and decided to gear up and paddle over. That day was the best flows I have seen on it, and we were surfing 3 across on a big green glassy wave. The rest of my visits have provided a smaller wave/hole feature, and always fun.

Wow, thanks just what I was looking for. Now what do you mean by shallow though, because I am 99% confident that's where its at. Is it a paddle breaker or heas fogger or just a few scratches kind of thing. Oh and is it good?

Can be shallow enough to scrape your boat, but head and paddle are usually worry free. Pretty deep really. How good depends on a lot of factors, but yes, it's usually pretty decent in the shoulder seasons (when it runs), especially if you live within 100 miles of it. I should mention that it's probably a pretty terminal and deadly hole at most levels above 7,000... definitely is at 24,000.

Don't try to put-in from the top (above the dam). I nearly decapitated myself trying to duck under the roller of the dam, thinking I had more room to duck under it than I did. A bit of a close call.
