I have a group of 3 (Solid - Class IV) boaters that would like to run the U. Animas over Memorial weekend. Preferably either Sat 5-29 or Sunday 5-30.

None of us have ever done this section so we were hoping we could get some other yakkers to show us down. We would like to take out at the Tacoma Power Plant.

I'm assuming that this section will be runnable at that time, please let me know if that is an unrealistic expectation.

Any help appreciated,

Bone

I highly recommend the Upper A. It's one of the best runs in Colorado especially if you do an overnighter with train support. Be sure your group has solid big water boating skills though. At 3600 cfs it is full on IV+. The stuff in between the V's gets big. I remember one nearly river wide hole when we ran it last year at 3600 cfs that caught me by surprise  . A guide can show you where the V's are but you'll proably be on your own for the stuff in between. Swimming the Upper A doesn't look fun. The water is freezing and the run is remote. We've chased boats a long ways at this level and have had many people take the train out at needleton after having enough on the upper section.

I don't mean to scare you off, just wanted to give you a heads up. If you're into big water class IV+/V- it's a great time especially if you run the lower box. Last year's run at this level was one of my favorite runs of the year. Just be ready for it at this level.

Back to the top.... Still looking for shuttle help

I can get another 2-3 paddlers/boats/& gear dropped at the put-in @ Silverton, but I need a vehicle for the take-out at Tacoma that could shuttle peoples and boats back to Durango after the run.

Somebody out there has gotta be interested? Come on - help a brother out.

Lemme know,

Just in case- bring cash on the trip. If for some reason the Upper Animal is giving you more that you can handle, you get hypothermic, or someone gets injured; you can flag down the train, throw your boat in a freight car and ride back to the takeout. We had a couple of folks last year @high water that were partied out by the time they got to Needleton and they met us at Rockwood.

Always good to have a plan B- $25 should easily get you and your boat to Rockwood.
