I'm trying to remove the pedestal from a new-to-me royalex canoe, and raise it by regluing 1.5" of foam underneath. assuming it is glued in with some sort of contact cement, what'll be the cleanest way to remove it?
I removed/reglued pedestals a number of times back when I was an open boater. Use something flat, flexible, and not too sharp to separate the saddle from the hull. Keep the tool really flat/parallel to the hull - you're basically trying to split the bond, not pry things up. I have a 1" wide putty knife that works well to get things started, then I use an old hacksaw blade to get where the putty knife can't reach. You're going to wind up with old glue and possibly a very thin layer of foam still stuck to the hull, but that's not a big deal. Weldwood (red can) contact cement bonds just fine over that.
