Reading the Black Canyon thread got me thinking about this. It seems like it would be easy enough to rig. Who's done it, with what success?

You're thinking of a swiss seat. Any rope can be made into a harness though you need far less than what comes in the bag. You'd have to cut a length. Also, the weaker the rope the weaker the harness and any falls could be disastrous.

You're better off using some 1 or 2" tubular webbing. It's cheap and you can cut it to the correct length.

Add some pool noodles and duck tape them so they don't rip when you have full overnight gear plus on your back noodles are key

You do not want your boat attached to you when portaging in there... You may want to drop it to preserve your health....
