I need to be in Telluride for a Downhill Mountain bike race the last weekend in July.

I know there is a nice campground in town that fills up fast. Any other recommendations in case it is full or Forest service land close that be camped on?

There's a lot of USFS access around Telluride. There are several access roads towards Sawpit (Hwy. 145) and several towards Lizzard Head Pass (also Hwy. 145). You can usually find spots at Trout Lake near Lizzard Head. There is also good camping up near Alta Lakes (also accessed off Hyw. 145). Get a Colorado Gazetteer and you'll have no problems.

Re: Alta Lakes

During a recent visit to Alta Lakes, I was impressed with how nicely the primitive camp sites are kept. As a courtesy to others, it's always nice to pick up trash left by less conscientious shit-heads before you depart. :D Have fun, beautiful area, lots of great half hour - hour hikes 'n fishin' up there.
