The one beef I have with the gear tarp I had made is I just had them put grommets in a double layer of fabric as attachment points. It's held up well to ~20 years of use(abuse?) But when I have the replacement made, it will be better reinforced.

I probably went a little overboard with this one, polyester 1" webbing and polypro 1.5 webbing for the border.

That's what I thought! I think I've mostly just heard it referred to as tacking or I just wasn't paying attention enough.

I was planning on only going in a couple of inches on each D-ring, maybe like three inches or so?

I would obviously go all the way across, it's a PITA rolling up the big ol' piece of material so you can feed it through the machine but it seems like cheap insurance. For this sling and a previous iteration the d-rings on the top have been super useful in attaching a bag you found after strapping the whole thing down.

Another useful tip from one @tanderson was to buy/make a super long loop strap, girth hitch the buckle end to a boat d-ring near the corner of the sling and the long strap end to the opposite side, then weave the long strap between sling d-rings and boat d-rings until you get to the buckle. Clear as mud?

A good rule to follow when sewing webbing is that wherever webbing intersects more webbing, it should always overlap by the full width.

I finished up my gear sling. I think it turned out pretty good considering I totally winged it. I've got eight d-rings around the perimeter and two offset from the center. It's 28"x42" and fits nicely on the back of my mini max. Hopefully it will fit just as well when I've loaded all my gear. Thanks everyone for the help!

I also made a drag bag. It's got two D-Rings and a homemade camstrap closure. Next project is probably a drop bag using @gwheyduke 's method.

Sewn goods manufacturers operate at a pretty slim margin, especially in this day and age of inflation.

That's so not cool.. Nothing against DIY people, I'm one of them, but figuring out something for yourself is one thing..

But cool that you supported Tuffriverstuff, River Rat Ray is a military Veteran, who's been taken down by MS, and is supporting himself by making sewn goods and selling boating gear that's a step above everything else available..

Unless your plan is to start a business buying a sewing machine to make your own gear is way more expensive than just biting the bullet and purchasing from someone who already does it. So really the fool is the one who expects to save money from this hobby. Anyone who flyfishes and ties flies knows this. I personally really enjoying creating things from scratch and in addition to that sourcing gear for my mini max is almost as much as a pain in the ass as sourcing the material lol. As of right now that's a $300+ drag bag lol.

Ray pioneered the everything bag, when he started making them nobody else did, now every Tom Dick and Harry with a sewn goods company is manufacturing them..

To me, and maybe I'm a righteous POS, offering to copy someone else's product and provide the patterns, that's trying to make a business, and took the time trouble and effort to invent and perfect a piece of gear, well it just sits wrong with me..
