We are currently looking for a new machine at the shop and I am in the research phase. I continue to research mysewlf in to burlier more automated machines. Currently looking at Juki 2810 series. Auto-backtacking, thread trimmer, programmable stitch functions and large throat area. Also drooling over the Vetron 5000 . Such Technology Very Stitch!

I watched this video of the 2810 and wow! So many things I don't understand...why doesn't the thread come out from the bobbin, where in the hell is the thread trimmer, the top thread is just - cut and the bottom thread is nowhere to be seen, the pneumatic control, just whoa.

I could more than make use of the machine, and could afford to buy it...but can't afford the time to use it, and it would send me right down a really great rabbit-hole of sewing projects.
I have 28 oars in various stages of completion in my shop, and they're going to get all my free time this spring.

I'll be picking up a 1" binding guide at some point, how do you manage the webbing spool? After watching the video a couple of times I finally figured out that you were using the metal tool to hold the cut end of the webbing down...

I've done it by hand, it sucks. I used light duty polypro and pre-folded the webbing, no pinning but I have used clips.

Hmm... so I think I might have found an older Juki Bartack machine for a reasonable price. Should make strap work a breeze but I'm also kind of wondering whether its overkill for my needs and not thrilled about it being a "uni-tasker" sort of machine. It does an amazing job doing the job it does but not much good for anything else. I guess I could start blasting out a line of straps and such to pay for it.

Thoughts?

IMHO that's a "business" machine. If you need the machine, you need the business to justify it.
Unless you have the money burning a hole in your pocket and just want an insanely cool bartacker. Then full send!

Probably not worth it. Bartacks look nice but unless you’re doing production work, it’s hard to justify. The old mechanical tackers can be a gamble too. If the cams or rollers are too worn you’ll break needles and ruin your project. Buying and paying to install replacement cams will be at least twice what you pay for the machine.

For quality strap work that you’d be selling, you want an programmable electronic machine that does serial tacks. Stacking single tacks is hard to make look nice and gets pretty tedious. Better to just use the reverse lever on your straight stitch machine
