Doing a San Juan trip from Sand Island to Clay Hills at the end of this month and was looking for some camp site suggestions and other good side hikes. If you have any other good information about this section please share. Thanks.
Excellent unassigned camps include Honaker, False John's, and John's Canyon. When you sign up for camps, make sure to get Slickhorn C or D- it's the coolest hike, especially if there is water (which there was not this year in July). Grand Gulch is a great camp, but if you also stay at Slickhorn, it makes for a long, slow 13 mile row out on the last day- I recommend choosing between SH and GG and then staying at Oljeto or Steer Gulch the final night. Pros and cons- both will be buggy, but Oljeto has an awesome hike if you get a tribe permit to hike on river left and Steer Gulch has a choice of camping behind the tammies against the cliff or on a giant sandbar away from the bugs. They are 7 and 5 miles from the takeout respectively. Hope this helps- have a great time!
