just like waterworld, so i have a bunch of big kite's from kiteboarding back in the day and was wonderin has anyone hooked 1 up to a raft ? a down river wind would be so kickass drop the oars grab a beer. or you could blast back up river to that camp you missed.
I'm going to try this sh^t out next week on a desert river.
I'm planing on bringing a 18m and 20m kite hooking up on wife's 14' aire cat.
and no I don't have life insurance..they said I'm uninsurable.....lol

I believe warming air might have other plans to these kites. It's possible to have a downstream wind in the desert... maybe before 9 am... And with no low Pressure systems within 200 miles.

Please take pictures/video.

Last winter some buddies and I rigged one to the front of an 86 foot wooden sailboat and used it both running and sailing nearly upwind. It was very cool, if not dangerous for the guy running it. If you do, you must post a video or pics on the buzz.

...drop the oars grab a beer...
If you've been kite boarding, you know this is not the case. You'll have to be more on top of things than just running the oars. I'd also be concerned about holding an edge if you plan on going any direction other than with the wind. Give it a try though, and definately post video!

Worth a shot. But on desert rivers (Deso, Grand), I recall more upstream winds during the day. Local winds blow according to thermal gradients, so they tend to blow from lower/warmer places to higher/cooler ones, i.e. upslope and updrainage. Opposite at night.

My understanding is that a kite, like a spinnaker, is strictly a downwind sail.

Look for a river that flows with the prevailing wind rather than against, and it might be worthwhile.

Kaya dog let me know how that works for ya..... I will be down the lower the 19th-22nd. If it works it would be great for the hot day up river wind in the canyon. It would be awesome to kick back and drink a beer and let the kite do the work.
