Weird how sometimes this board posts replies elsewhere.
Back to the Piedra road / upper section question
It's a nice float, but not really worth doing unless the lower gate is closed. Even then, you're in the upper part for the scenery. There are a couple of decent rapids, but it's still a 12 mile float to the campground 1/2 way down. Super-high water (like 2500+ on the guage) would make it much more fun, but the gate should be open if it gets anywhere near that....which I doubt will happen this year. If there's nothing else running (unlikely) it makes a cool overnight.
Overall, just wait until the lower gate is open. The shuttle takes about 1/4 the time. and the good rapids are in the lower stretch.
