re:SBC?

A group of us are heading out to CO. the end of june and will be camping at golden gate a couple of nights. We are are competent class IV boaters and run the occasional V. My question in lite of the recent tragedy that happened on the creek does a 1st timer down need a guide or are the 3 V's (moist slot, bridge drop & brain) easlily noticed when you come up on them so you can get out to scout.

Info is greatly appreciated and my condolences to everyone involved in the recent tragedy.

Haven't done LSB in a couple years, so I don't want to comment on the approach to these drops.

But....have you thought about Bailey Canyon? If you have a crew that is solid on Class IV/IV+ then Bailey is a great run and the rapids are higher quality than on SBC in my opinion. Drop me a PM and I'll be happy to guide you down it if I'm free.

Scouting SBC

Everything on the run is easily scouted- much of it has a wide trail right next to the river. Still, its what you don't see on any run that we need to worry about. Just post when you're ready to go- no shortage of paddlers round these parts. Enjoy!

from a rafting perspective:

slot drop was easy to spot. it's the first big drop in the first mile or so. there was a good eddy about 50 yards above the drop on the right that lead to a bridge that crossed the creek before the drop. portage/scout on the left.

the brain, the second drop, a mile or two below the slot, isn't as obvious. it has an innocous approach. eddy out left when you "feel " something coming up. this is one i wouldn't want to run blind. the left side has an ugly death sieve. portage/scout left.

the third rapid, walker ranch/bridge is preceded by a calm pool. scout/portage on the right.

lastly the dam drop is obvious; preceded by a large pool. scout/portage left.

bailey would be a better run if it's running. i doubt it'll run until august or later.

I will go a large step further to state that "the brain" is not nearly obvious and most definitely can kill if you go left. The left side (imo) is one of the ugliest rapids on the front range. The only way through is on the right which would be very difficult if you didn't start from that side VERY early on in the rapid.

I would highly recommend a guide.. if for only that rapid. It's basically just a class 2 lead in that is very difficult to tell where the horrizon line is until you are deep into it.

Beyond that rapid and Bridge which is a very obvious horizion line, the whole runs really is wonderful and not overly difficult. A class IV creeky feel and good wilderness run.
