I personally wouldn't buy an old rope and certainly not a 50m, 70 meter is what I would buy if I were in the market.

Youtube's "How Not 2" might break test it if you send it to them...

I am looking to sell this climbing rope, but I am not quite ready. I would like to get your opinion.

I have an unused climbing rope, Mammut Granite, 50m, 10.5mm. The catch is that the rope is 20 years old. It has been stored in my house, and has been sitting in a closet - a cool dry place. It looks brand new. I no longer climb. I have not climbed in 20 years.

Would you trust the rope? Would you buy this rope? Any other aspects to discuss.

I would not use it for life safety. If I remember correctly around 10 years with little or no use you retire it. Rope will break down no matter where or how stored. Although would make an ok bow line or rescue/pin kit rope. Keep in mind that it is dynamic and will stretch 6-8 percent under load.

Rule of thumb for climbing ropes is retire at 10 years regardless of use. It could make a nice stretchy line for other projects.

Definitely not safe for climbing. As others have mentioned, ropes degrade even if unused. I’ve read break test results where ropes like yours (old, but unused) broke at around 3 falls, but were rated at around 12 (can’t remember exact numbers). Selling it to someone intending to climb on it would be highly unethical. I wouldn’t top rope on it, I wouldn’t use it as a haul line, nothing where a life is involved.

However, you’re looking at the perfect tow rope. I use my retired ropes for all kinds of stuff, that’s a good one. They’re very soft and non-jarring. They’re great dog leashes and tie down lines too. Cut that thing up and use it for something else.

thanks everyone for your replies. You helped me make up my mind. I believe I will sell my old used climbing rope, that looks old, and explicitly state that not to be used for life threatening situations. I will keep the new/Un-used rope for my own use.
