I've been rowing an Odyssey bucket boat for about five years now. Been a great gear boat but I've learned enough that I feel I'm finally ready to upgrade. The boat's condition is almost as good as the day I got it with one exception. The military valves leak. They've been exposed to quite a bit of sand and gravel and when I soaped them I got bubbles in the valve cavities but not around the valves in the boot areas. I interpret (and fervently hope) this to mean it's probably the valve stems and not the boots.
My plan is to remove the valve stems for cleaning and inspection then reinstall them, inflate the boat and pray. I really don't want to have to address valve boots on a boat I think is worth around $400.
My questions are:
1. Given what I've said how likely is it that it's only the stems?
2. To remove do I just take out the little screws then pull? Tried one last night and it wouldn't come out but I didn't pull very hard lest I tear a boot doing something wrong.
3. I'm asking $1k for raft (fourteen feet), bag, frame (breakdown made with EMT and Frontierplay fittings) and oars (Outfitters). Does that seem fair assuming I get the valve issue resolved and the boat is otherwise fine except for some floor leaks?
Thanks buzzards! Poverty boaters rule!
