The poudre was running thru town all last week. Is this water from Seaman's? The gauges don't the reflect the amount of water I saw running through Fort Collins. If it is coming out of Seaman's, then the Filter plant run has been going for about a week. Anyone out there know?

It's not flowing through the canyon. I've been working up the canyon and down on the flat along the river for a couple of weeks. My guess is it's coming from Horsetooth or Big T Project somewhere below the canyon mouth.
I know, I got excited when I saw it too.

It seems to be flowing out of horsetooth. I drive through Bellvue each morning and the canal out of the resivoire is cranking.

Does this mean that the wave/hole in the canal below Horestooth is going? There was a write up on that spot on the Colorado kayaking website I believe.

The horsetooth hole is actually on a canal that feeds into horsetooth at inlet bay, above the resevoir, although I wouldn't be surprised if it is running right now. The best way to find out is to drive up there and check it out. For more information you can find the aforementioned article @

The Horsetooth Hole at Inlet Bay shouldn't be much.

The post to Coloradokayaking.com was made in August of 2003--back when we had the reservoir drawn down for a rebuild of its four impounding dams. During that time, the elevation of the reservoir was dropped about 70 vertical feet.

Today, the reservoir is at an elevation of about 5328 feet--at least 40 or so vertical feet higher than the reservoir would have been back in 8/03. Also, we are only running about 18 cfs into the reservoir, today. The summer season is over, so for the rest of this month and probably part of November, water will be going out of Horsetooth and not much will be coming in.

Through the winter, the water level will stabilize. Water levels will start going up again (depending on weather conditions) in the spring, typically in April, with the high water mark the beginning of May.

As for the Poudre--it's up through north Ft. Collins most likely because of the releases from Horsetooth to irrigators and other water users. We are releasing about 560 cfs from the reservoir right now. I don't know how much longer the releases will be at that rate, but no more than two weeks, is my guess.

The hole is not going. There is very little water coming into the res. at the moment. The feature in the 'ditch'/stream would still be present with enough water coming in. The water level of the res. is definetly low enough to accomodate.

Since we seem to be on the subject of horsetooth reservoir, has anyone ever seen horsetooth falls with water in it? I'm assuming that it is natural flow since it is above the reservoir on the hills just to the west, but it would be cool as hell to see some water in it. Random hijack, sorry. :roll:

I've seen Horsetooth Falls with a fair amount of water in it, maybe even enough to run it (circa '99, before I had taken up boating). It looks pretty cool, and short, and the crux would definitley be avoiding a large rock in the landing zone of the falls. I think that it could be done.
On a side note: there is a decent wave in town right now just downstream of College Ave., north of town. At the 2nd little sluice you can front and back surf, spin and blunt. Not that sweet but fun for the jonesing. Should be good until they lower the flow.
