Hey all, I’m looking for more detailed information on the Piedra and Animas river. I have listed a couple questions below.

Thanks for the help.

Piedra- what is the lowest level to float this and still have fun?

Can you break the 19miles in half? Or do you have to commit to the entire run?

How many hours would it take at current level (645cfs)?

How difficult is the river at current flows (III OR IV)?

Any hazards to watch for and can you scout all the drops?

Animas- same questions

We are planning to head south next weekend and these are to two rivers we would like to due. Any information you can help with would be much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Craig :D

Piedra- 700 is the lowest I ve done it. A little bumpy but good fun.

It can be split up by camping at the campground separating the boxes. Just Run a vehicle with camp goods up the river left road to the bridge and camp there.

Might I suggest bagging the "second" (upper) Box and just run from the aformentioned camp to takeout. This run consists of the better whitewater and least driving. Setting the shuttle for the whole run is ardous compared to water gained. It also requires three vehicles.

Difficulty is fun III/IV with mudslide/eye of the needle @ V. Scout/ portage river right a few hundred yards after "mudslide one" at pool above constriction. Scouting at this level is generally eddy scout for everything else.

Animas-
Can be split. See other relevant post floating around.
Difficulty is continous III with a few IV and V. Cold, Cold, Cold water. One day is a long one, but a good one.
Scout via RR tracks. Technically trespassing so walk by the tracks.

I would like to do it Sat. If thats when your thinking can I join.

Hi Craig,

I don't know much about these rivers (sorry) but I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm trying to sell my boat to a nice guy in Durango, but am not interested in making the drive down from Boulder. Is there any way you can throw an extra boat on your car/truck on the way down, and arrange to meet up with this guy somewhere in the Durango/Telluride/Animus area? I can pay you a bit of money, or offer you beer for the trip, or maybe a good CD for the ride! Let me know if you can help, and we can meet up somethere in the front range area. Best of luck with your trip!
