I don't often need power in a rock garden, do you? I need maneuverability.Except for every single time you have offset obstacles that do not allow you to take a single line. Do you maintain that strategy through a rock garden?
Unless I am trying to perch myself on a rock to fish.
If you have followed this conversation.
OP asks about oar position on small cat.
Conversation ensues about pushing and pulling and when.
Schutzie posts up if you push more than you pull you are doing it wrong.
This is complete bullshit.
Conversation degenerates into pig boats, pushing, pulling, blah, blah, blah.
I maintain that pushing is a great stroke that I use far, far more than backstroking. Except when fishing.
Even in a rock garden like Powerhouse, Haystack or Hancock I push more than I pull. High water, low water - I don't give a shit, it works for me. If you want really feel manly and all muscular and feel like you are running the Olympics in a shell pulling crew type thing - go for it. I have no judgement but that is not the only way. It is not the correct or incorrect way. It is a way. I prefer to work with the river to get where I want to be. I wouldn't say always, but often when you really have to pull it is because you have made a mistake.
And I know that many of you may disagree and find instances where you have to pull like hell on some move on some rapid somewhere. So fire away.
If you want a real challenge try to run for a day with one oar.
