I'm just getting into kayaking, I'm 40 years old 5'8" 140lbs and would like to get a boat that I can grow into (skill that is) ... and after looking over many boats I'm leaning towards the Jackson Punk Rocker or the Habitat
but being so new to the sport I just wanted you guys (the veterans) to let me know if my direction is ok or if I needed to start with something else in the way of a creek newbie.

Depends on what you want to do with your paddling. You've listed creekers, is that what you want? As an instructor, I've fitted a ton of boats. The Ammo by Pyranha is pretty popular. The Habitat is ok but if you go that route you may as well get a Jefe (best creek boat ever!) Personally, I don't like the Jackson creekers very much as they don't track for s*&%. The Remix by Liquid Logic has been getting alot of attention and they just made an expedition model (check out their website). Used boats are a good option as well (check for wear and tear if you buy used). Mostly, just find something that "feels" right, i.e. Is it comfortable? Check out the outfitting and any "flex" in the plastic. For the most part, all companies make quality boats so fit and use are the two bigger questions one should ask him/herself when buying a used/new boat.

i think the punk rocker would be too small for you. especially if you want to get into creeking. the rocker is a good boat... but personally i like a boat that has come chimes which the rockers dont. all jackson boats that i have sat in have all been really nice. for your first year or so getting a used boat is a good idea. new boats are pricy.

If you're not looking for a creeker (and I can't imagine why you would for your first boat) I would look at the Jackson Hero series and the Remix series from LL.
