Hey,
I'm a new class II-III paddler looking to get my foot into the industry. I am currently working a seasonal job at a hiker lodge in New England and am trying to plan my next move! When this job ends this fall, I'm hoping to pack up the car & the kayak to follow the water. Since I am new to this sport, I don't really know what are the hot spots for paddling during the coming winter season. Any recommendations??? A river where I could continue with the hospitality work and in a community much more white-water focused, would be ideal!!! I've heard that Costa Rica is the place to be right now; any spots in the US too? I'm open to ANY suggestions across the country!

Asheville NC and Portland OR are the two primary winter paddling hubs in the U.S. The PNW is cold and a drysuit will be mandatory. NC you could probably pick your days and make do without. Bear in mind as a II-III paddler finding other motivated paddlers of similar ability with snow on the ground probably won't be easy.

Come to Oregon. You won't want to leave. I moved here last October for the same reason. Getting ready for my first winter season as a Class 3 paddler. I'll paddle with you. Economy is another story. May be hard to find work.

Ohiopyle, PA! There's year-round boating, and it's within an hour's drive or so from W. Virginia and Maryland both, which both have great river access. As for working in the hospitality industry, check out Nemacolin Resort, I've had a lot of friends work there.

i recommend somewhere in Appalachia. WV/PA/MD. or TN/NC/SC/GA. get yourself a drysuit or some high quality layers to stay warm no matter where you plan to paddle this winter. find some paddlers with a similar skill set and get out there and paddle as much as you can.

Charly you spent a couple weeks in Futa a couple winters ago right?
