Folks- spring peak release final notice below. We are starting the release May 18th. The ramp-up takes 5 days, and then it takes another 2-3 to make it to Bluff, so expect flows to start increasing by the 21st, and the peak to reach the rafting area by the 23rd or so. We are still expecting Animas peak sometime around the first week of June, which when combined with our release, will approach 8,000 cfs.

Call or email if you have questions-

Susan

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION
NAVAJO RESERVOIR
2016 SPRING PEAK RELEASE FINAL SCHEDULE
May 11, 2016

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

The Bureau of Reclamation has finalized this year's scheduled spring peak release from Navajo Reservoir. Reclamation will begin to increase the release on Wednesday, May 18th, 2016 at 1:00 AM, reaching 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Sunday, May 22nd at approximately 11:00 AM. The release will stay at 5,000 cfs for up to 31 days, or until the spring runoff on the Animas River is complete. If all 31 days at peak are utilized, the release will begin decreasing on Thursday, June 23rd at approximately 9:00 AM, reaching 500 cfs on Monday, July 4th at approximately 4:00 AM, where it will remain until further notice.

The shape and timing of the hydrograph have been coordinated with the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program to balance recovery program benefits with potential flood control and operational safety. During spring operations, releases from the Navajo Unit will be made in an attempt to remain at or below the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safe channel capacity of 5,000 cfs between Navajo and the confluence with the Animas River in Farmington, and 12,000 cfs downstream of Farmington. The release may be changed or reduced if precipitation forecast show risk of exceeding safe channel capacity in the San Juan River.
