I am posting this as it may help someone avoid this experience in the future.

Have you ever heard that old ZZ top song "Esther Be The One" ; "She'll get you...." I thought this might be Esther :(.

Floating through an easy class III rapid on the Poudre in an unfamiliar boat, a moment of mental indolence got me in serious trouble. A wave spun me 180 and I made hard contact with a rock wall on my right side. In an another display of negligence, I simply thought I would continue backwards until I clear the wall and then casually spin back down stream. Well I passed by a hole in the wall that formed a nasty swirling eddy (a mini Room of Doom) and was promptly sucked in . It was really small but violently turbulent. It kept slamming me against the wall and I could not get enough traction to cross the eddy fence and back into the flow of the river. Every time I attempted a couple strokes the upstream current would hit the stern about the same time the down stream current would hit the bow then follow with a UFC caliber body slam into the wall. Then I flipped and made a few roll attempts but each time I was rolling against the wall so I exited the boat. I hung on to the boat and continued my metronomic wall slam and swirl as frantic boaters tried to enter the eddy only to be repelled by the turbulence. I was starting to choke on water and wonder "Is this Esther" Then as I made a revolution toward the eddy fence the boat rotated where the cockit was facing the eddy fence. As it hit the fence water quickly filled the bow full and the boat plunged downward yanking it and me through the fence and out into the current were a valient Texas boater's stern was waiting :p . Worst a$$ woop'n this old boy has ever had on the water.

I swear to god almighty I will never ever get lackadaisical on the river again. For when you do my friend, she will rise up and smite thee.

You guys still stuck in the 80's up there in ghost town mike?

Sketch balls...would translate to scary event where you could actually taste your balls in your mouth because they are so big after attempting or being subjected to such dangerous and scary situation.

Urban Dictionary: sketchball

sketch

Only in Casper have they ever not heard of sketchball. sketchasaurus is also the lamest thing I have ever heard.

Sketchajawea is much better. It salutes the great sacajawea. You could also say Stuffajawea, like "How did it go with that girl last night, did you Stuffajawea".

Or "Man I thought I had a good boof, but I got stuffajawea'd".

Or "That falls is killer, you gotta get a little boofajawea off the lip and hope for the best".

Or "Man this chick was hot but she was from Casper and totally Sketchajawea".

I was expecting a tale of the redhouse suck hole when you started talking about the Poudre. I have not been up there in 13 years, I assume it still is a death trap?

upper Mish section I think? We started on Upper Mish and it happened before we got to Mish Inn.
Mish Falls is immediately above the Mishawaka. Was it the rapid above that? We call that "The Squeeze." That sounds like the spot. I don't even take rafts through that left side above 2.5-3 feet because of that eddy line. It can flip boats and I've seen swimmers stuck in there.

Below 2.5 feet some of us call the rapid "WHAM!" (credit goes to Dan Piper, who always yells "wham!" right there) because we like to paddle into the rock wall and taco the raft.

Next time go right. Interesting story though. That's a weird spot.

The red house suck hole was right next to, or just past a red house on river right. There was a below water level rock that had a cone shaped hole through it. Water would go through the hole and you could be sucked in and drowned. It has been so long since I was there, I can't quite remember which stretch it was on.

I don't think so, maybe. But I will have to find out from the rest of the guys as my brain completely shit the bed after that. This was a very easy rapid just go strait down the wave train. You have to be trying to fck it up; which I accomplished in spectacular fashion.

Definitely the Squeeze

Definitely The Squeeze. I spent some time in that room a few weeks back after punching the hole side of the wave hole at the top, that seam will stern squirt you or mystery move you right into that little working eddy on the left. As my buddies were passing me and I was doing laps in the eddy I thought to myself that a swim might result in some serious down time, and possibly more laps as a swimmer, luckily I caught a good surge at the top of the eddy and paddled away. Provided some unexpected excitement for sure. I am definitely more heads up on that one now.
