I am new to rafting, my family has taken a trip down Deso for the last 3 yrs. We have taken a old air cooled outboard with us just in case that breeze comes up. I think it finally gave up the ghost this year. My question is, do you use an air cooled or a regular outboard on Deso? Will the silty water tear up the water pump?

Nope

Ive used watercooled motors several times. Just perodicaly check the water pump stream. keep a squirt gun handy for any clogs and watch for sand bars.

Impellers are cheap and an easy fix- don't sweat it

I agree....for the few hours you plan to run it each year in silty water, I wouldn't sweat it. If you were running that stretch as much as the rangers do, you'd need to check it at the end of each year.

Run my 4 stroke Honda 5 hp probably 100 hours every summer in WAY silty water (Cat, Deso, etc.) and have never had a problem. I do tank it after every trip, run clean water through, and change both lower unit and engine oil frequently (every 40-50 hours).
