Haha... Well, when I used these to clean grout and it worked so well, I googled it to see how they work and that's what I found. You're right though, it's obscure info!
Yeah, Melamine is a funny compound, the Chinese were using it in animal foods a few years back to boost the nitrogen content and pretend it was protein. It is also used in a lot of plastic dishware. A rafting kitchen set probably has a few pieces made from Melamine. The "magic eraser" is a foam version of the same stuff.
If I remember correctly, it is pretty benign chemically unless you mix it with chlorine. It's just not so great when you eat lots of it, hence the concern over Chinese dog food.
