Help! Native Coloradan new to the Virginia area and am dying to get out on the water. Looking for paddling buddies/fun runs/camping areas/outdoorsy activities. Am down for literally anything. Not to sound desperate or anything, but I'm really struggling with all this flat water...

East coast has the goods

Great falls is rad. UY is also a good weekend destination.
Youghiogheny River!!!!!!

Or take the drive to the west and hit the new and Gauley in West Virginia. Dozens of other runs in VA after rain.
The lower yak is pretty good class 3. You'll want a local to do the upper

The Shenandoah and Potomac have some great sections and the Rappahannock can be fun when the level is up a bit. The New River Gorge in WV is one of my favorite and the Gauley is just awesome. Lots of guys on the James River as well. A local Club that has ALOT of great folks and lots of great trips is the Coastals.
Keep away from those DC boaters they are a strange bunch.

The lower yough is pretty low right now, so the falls are legal. Drive up to Ohiopyle and huck your balls off, then go for a loop lap (a large horseshoe bend in the river allows you a short hike back to the put-in).

Great falls is quite dangerous, if your competent then great, if not stay away. More times then not, a swim prompts the public spectators to call 911 for a rescue. Its in a national park so boating is tenable at best.
Boater talk is the forum to use for this area. Also northeast paddlers message board
