I'm goin to paddle Lake Superior in a couple of weeks and was gonna use that as an excuse to buy a GPS unit for my kayak. Being lost in ridiculously cold water doesn't sound fun. Thoughts?

stay with in site of shore, storms with 8'-10' seas can come up with in minutes, especially if the winds are coming from W-NW-N across the lake.

as for GPS, i have the Garmin Etrex Legend. Water resistant, small and works great. Also had the Etrex Vista for my last job. I never needed the extra memory but see that it could come in handy if you wanted to download maps.

The Garmin Legend is pretty slick. WAAS installed in the Legend is like poor man's diffirential GPS and gives you great accuracy.

Alternately, get a pocket PC and a GPS card from Ebay, probably a little cheaper, less durable, but more wizz-bang.

Keep in mind that there is no subsitute for good map and compass skills.

Happy navigating.
