Just wanted to put the Kern River Festival on the Radar for the Moutain Buzz Community. The dates are April 19-20 and details can be found at

Come out and enjoy the Brush Creek race and all the fun in the park downtown; stay and run nearby classics like Dry Meadow, Tule, Kaweah and more. Promises to be a good time and a great way to kick off the 2008 Season.

Kern River Fest

I won't be able to make it out for the festival... but i just got back from Kernville a couple weeks ago... and I can personally say that it was one of my favorite towns I've visited in quite a while. Maybe that's just because of its close proximity to some great runs on the Kern, Dry Meadows, and Brush Creek. I highly recommend loading up and heading West.

Even with low water the long haul was well worth it... but as it's shaping up the festival should have some pretty good water this year.

Plus the Kern River Brewing Company is AMAZING. Class V Stout all the way!

I'm not sure I can reveal my secret identity - but here are some hints:

I used to race slalom back east
I moved to San Diego and got a Ph.D.
I now pour beer in Kernville (Thanks for the support LiquidGuy!)
I'm married to Rebecca Giddens

Oops, that last one may have given it away...

By the way, said beer we be available at the Sierra South Happy hour after the brush creek race. We'll also have live music on Friday and Saturday night at the brewery.

Also, it looks like the Cataracts of the Kern (Class V) might be running http://www.sierrasouth.com/pdf/KernBelowDemocrat2005EricGiddens.pdf - watch the release from Lake Isabella. I would say that 700 is on the low end, 1000-1200 would be optimal for a first time down. Otherwise, lots of class III-IV on the upper and lower for those looking for a warm-up to the boating season.

Kern Fest...

I'm headed out of Salida next week. Cant wait to boat some new runs and looking forward to a fun festival. Just got a foot of fresh here at Monarch, about to go take some turns. Prob be the last before boating. See you in Cali.

Yeah, that trip report was written during an extremely strong procrastination phase in school. Plus the run has about 15 class V drops, so there is plenty of material.

One last shameless plug for the race; the coveted "Golden Bootie" award will be given out at the Brush Creek Race for the most pathetic display of paddling during the competition. The prize comes complete with beer/rootbeer to chug out of said bootie if a swim is involved.
