Anybody know of a good place to get a bed mounted truck rack. I've been all around town and the cheepest ones are $600. I don't want to spend that much if I don't have to.
Thanks.

My buddy in NM made his own and it's sweet- maybe he'd do a custom one for you for cheaper than what you'd find from a shop. He's a boater and a regular Buzz poster. Just f***ed up his leg biking so maybe he's got time to build you one...

I paid about $750.00 for my ladder rack with removable kayak stackers and Line-X'd from Remuda Manufacturing in denver. Bomber, very worth it and ever once in a while i actually strap some lumber or ladders up there.

I had a great idea but it was poorly executed.

I didn't want to put an all out rack system on there because the truck needs to haul stuff when not carting boats around. I put 2" diameter bed rails on the back and then bought some of the Yakima X Towers from ebay. The towers are built for the Xterra's roof rack but it fits perfect on the bed rails. Then just mount bars across the back of the bed. Now you have a very strong removable rack system that holds at least 4 boats.
Overall costs: $200-250

my mistake was not double-checking the distance between the bedrails and the cab. Longer boats won't fit, I should have moved the bed rails back about 6 inches. Crap.

Let me know if you need more details.

custom rack - lets talk

I designed a custom rack on my LongBed Chevy that you might be interested in. It has a wire mesh rear section, standing bars on both sides with grip tape, handles in key locations. The rack can hold four rafts and six kayaks, or about 20 kayaks.
If you would like to talk details, email me first and we can xchange #s to talk about price, etc, if you're interested. [email protected]

I paid about 450 - they are easy to install and they are modular so you can take it apart and store it if you take it off the truck - also you can get ones that go over the top of a camper shell but still attach to the bed sides - you can romove the one I have with four bolts in the event you dont want the extra wieght / wind resistance when not hauling boats -
I think they are stronger than most of the home made jobs out there made of one inch box tubing - mine is suposedly rated for 1500 lbs which is more than the pickup suspension can realistically handle.

if you want to be able to sleep in it get a tall one to make the most of that little bed. Try Suburban topper in Denver or Aerosuds on the turnpike. I have been happy with ARE, but there are mony other good ones. It can be difficlut to mount a Snugtop over the feet of most racks (involves a sawzall).

Remuda of Denver makes good racks, and does line X as well.

thanks for the post. I think I'm looking for more than a rack. I think i want a shell and then mount a rack onto false raingutters.

dave interested in your rack

If your rack is a ladder rack let me know, and does it fit over a topper.
