I assume you want to visit between Memorial Day and Labor Day? If so, I would look at Collegiate Peaks, Mt Princeton, Chalk Lake, Cascade and Cottonwood Lake. There is excellent dispersed camping off Cottonwood and South Cottonwood as well as north of town along the river at Elephant Rock, #6 and #4. There is a ton of dispersed camping in Fourmile Recreation Area too. Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area state park riverside campground south of town at Ruby Mountain is worth consideration as well.
x2 on ruby for early season camp fest  cottonwood pass also good camping and stop by old hot springs to end good times on the river(aaaahhh) good times; numbers , browns (in the '90's) back to camp for camp feast onto the hot springs to relax, back to camp for libations , fire, and river stories
