I assume you want to visit between Memorial Day and Labor Day? If so, I would look at Collegiate Peaks, Mt Princeton, Chalk Lake, Cascade and Cottonwood Lake. There is excellent dispersed camping off Cottonwood and South Cottonwood as well as north of town along the river at Elephant Rock, #6 and #4. There is a ton of dispersed camping in Fourmile Recreation Area too. Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area state park riverside campground south of town at Ruby Mountain is worth consideration as well.

Four Mile Recreation area has some great, secluded spots as well. 4WD or high clearance recommended. All dispersed and free. Also beautiful views!
