GALLATIN WHITE WATER FESTIVAL
June 19th – June 20th, Bozeman and Gallatin Canyon, MT

The Gallatin Whitewater Festival has been an annual tradition located on the Gallatin River nearby Bozeman, MT. Over the past few years it has not been operating however, but it is being brought back this year in June of 2009. Historically it has occurred on the second or last weekend of June, during historical peak water run‐off. This event comprises of a gathering of local and regional whitewater enthusiasts enjoying time on the river with raft/ canoe/ kayak races, a kayaking rodeo, and evening festivities. Local and regional sponsors contribute to this event and it is a highly anticipated annual event for whitewater enthusiasts. Profits made from the event will go to a local charity or fund relating to river activities.

Normal races include Kayak, Cataraft, R2 Raft, open class raft races, and Canoe races. These races will start from the Moose Creek Campground and finish at the Storm Castle take out. This section of water is approximately one to two hours of normal float time. The endurance race is open to any class of boat listed above and will start at the Green Bridge and finish at Storm Castle take out. The Kayak rodeo will be held in a location suitable for surfing that will be deemed appropriate to the
group skill level and level of water. Kayakers will be judged by selected individuals and be scored on style, aggressiveness, competency, and selection of their line. The Open Class Derby Race will be a shortened race that will allow participants to make their own boat or use a nontraditional vessel to float through rapids. This race will go through class III rapids and will be closely monitored in the rapids for safety. It will start at the Screaming Left Rapids and end at the Lava Lake Trailhead. Rapids run during this race are less severe than the normal race. Hey Guys,
Glad to see a new generation of boaters taking on the task of putting on this event. I am not sure I know you guys, as I don't recognize your names. But, I was one of the main coordinators of the Gallatin Whitewater Festival for 7 years. I got involved when it was being hosted by Matt Kraska, Ian Godwin, and Dennis Steinhauer, helped for three years with them, then Dave Schroder, Chad Wiebe, Jonas Grenz and I took it over and put-it on for several more years. It was alot of fun, and alot of work.

Anyway, traditonally the downriver race was from Moose Flats to Lave Lake/ Bridge take-out, and we had classes for kayaks and canoes. We also would have a Boater Cross from the Super Eddy above House Rock to the end of the Mad Mile, and that was open to paddle raft teams and kayaks. We never had cataraft, or R2 classes, and the canoesit never wanted to go below the bridge. For several years we also had a Slalom course. If your intersted in doing that- Dennis Steinhauer I think, still has the gates. That was always a particpant favorite. We had a couple of awesome slalom courses over the years. Good Luck with selecting a spot for the rodeo, that was always a spot of contention for us, and some folks would invariebly get mad and think we should put it on somewhere else. Don't worry about it though, just determine a spot and go with it, you can't make everyone happy.

Anyway, I can see you guys are getting off to a late start with it, as I am just now hearing about, so if you have any questions about insurance, permits are any of that stuff drop me a line and I'll tell ya what I know.

Lastly, at the end of the event, be ready for very few thank you's and some criticism, we were always blown away by the feedback we got on, "how you guys can make it better" but nobody ever wanted to help- to make it better. Don't be discouraged though...just put on an event that you'd want to go to, and have fun!

Thanks alot for getting this event going again, and GOOD LUCK!

Clark, you never critiqued our efforts though, you were always a supporter- thank you.

I meant, that the people who were most criticial of the event, never thanked us, or volunteered to make it better.

Lots of people were very thankful and supportive over the years- i did not mean to imply that, sorry.

By the way, Clarkie- Joey V is coming over for it, Wiebe is going to make an apperance, Randy may show and I am going to come over as well. I've been trying to rally as many of the old timers as possible to come out and represent. Should be a fun time!
