deso bugs?

Anyone have a report for bugs on Deso this year? Have heard all the nightmares and did an early June trip last year without so much as a single mosquito bite or fly problem. Launching in a couple weeks so starting the process... thanks

Last I've heard (within a few days) including from River Runners in Vernal, things are still okay.
However, things can change in a hurry -- we'll be at Sand Wash Friday evening; hoping!
Maybe somebody else here has better predictive skills based maybe on flow predictions.
Since the skeeters become an issue after the water has peaked and is receding, and seeing as the BOR just started the big flush from Flaming Gorge that is supposed to last about two weeks, I'd say you are good to go. That's my guess. Deso + water - bugs = fun!

Have fun & report back.
Hey, SL girl, where did you get the beta on "about two weeks" (or is that just the routine for the flush)?

Bureau of Reclamation website, and several of the Green River fly shops.

Just got off on Friday and bugs were minimal - stil were bugs but nothing like it is during lower water. It was running close to 21k. Downside is that the beaches were smaller as well :)
Thanks, good info. We're a small group so not too worried about camps except to know that they will all be at a premium. Seems to be hanging at 20K.
Off yesterday. Skeeters were starting to grow in numbers, small flies were terrible, even in wind gusts of 20-30 mph. Big standing waves in Joe Hutch Creek Rapid (not so much in JH
Canyon Rapid). No bears, and sadly, no canyon wrens.
Rattlesnake

Anyone stay at Rattlesnake camp this week? There is a guy camping there who is making some rock art on the beach. Ranger noted that he carries an AK-47!

Also, shame on the fool who burned that nice camp across from the Indian lodge. One of my favorites gone for many years to come.

Did see a Bear & cub.
Thanks for info. Looks like we'll be prepped for a battle with the bugs. Where did you see the bear???

Great Bear gun but a lot of moving parts to get sand in. Also keeps anyone from wanting to camp too close.
Deso bugs?

Sorry guys. The bugs are out now. It's been pretty bad for the last couple of days. Also they are out at Deer Lodge, Lodore and Island Park. Bring lots of spray!
Deso shuttle

Thanks to River Runners transport for taking my flat tire to Green River and getting it fixed for me. Tire was repaired and waiting for me at the end of the trip, nice.
For those floating the next couple weeks:

ThermaCell has a "mini lantern (2006 model)" that has been discontinued everywhere other than there website that is recommended for higher elevations. All reports are these things do a reliable job of creating a 15x15 foot area largely free of bugs. They are selling 2 for $12 on their site, though its $7 for shipping. Seems like a cheap option if you don't have room for a screen shelter (like us). Evidently the other models struggle to work do to their lighting mechanism and this one is manual.

I will have a review of their function when I return July 5th. I will also let folks no how the "Original Bug Shirt" lives up to its reputation. Going loaded for bear and hoping we don't need half of our bug ammunition.

We saw him, he invited us to camp there....We moved on

They work quite well (got my first one while working at NOLS Yukon). The opening in the headnet for eating is nice.

Presumably this person is at the Rattlesnake site on river left?
