I am thinking of heading to CR in February and want to get some info on whitewater (volume) at that time of year and if the Rio General is anywhere as good as the Rio Pacuare. Also, any other rivers on the Pacific side that might be good.

The Rio Pacuare flows through a jungle canyon with steep gradient and technical rapids. It is runnable year-round and is stunningly beautiful.

The Rio General flows more through valleys with farms and is not as steep and technical as the Pacuare, with more big-water type whitewater. It is run during the rainy season and is usually not raftable by February. It is not as scenic as the Pacuare, but still very worthwhile.

The Reventazon has outstanding whitewater, but is basically a sewer.

The Sarapiqui is fun with lots of wall-shot type class II and III- rapids and lots of otters.

For the Pacific side, if you can handle flatwater, the Rio Corobici has outstanding wildlife, with 4ft long iguanas diving to the ground or into the river from up in the giant trees. Really cool.
