Cataract Oars / Fiberglass Splinters

Hi -

I have an older pair of fiberglass Cataract Oar that are sun dried to the point that when you carry them you get small fiberglass splinters (Think playing with house insulation on a hot day).

I am sure other people have experience this. What is the remedy? I was thinking of spraying them with clear spray paint or recoating them with some resin.

Any suggestions or has someone figured it out already?

Thanks
Chris

I have heard of folks using spar varnish on them. Spar provide some UV protection where epoxy or polyester does not. Spar is used commonly on fiberglass fly rod restoration. Several coats with a light sanding in between.

Auto body clear coat in the rattle can would probably work as well, there are lots of composite car parts theses days.
Sand with paper, sand with steel wool, wipe with solvent, spray with clear polyurethane.
