Gravity powered filter rig being tested, siphoning from the bucket on the bench. Filters are rated 1 micron and clean it was running close to 1 gpm. There is another brass valve on the end of the siphon hose to be able to close the whole system and keep the hose end at the bottom of the bucket.

Next to the water supply bucket on the bench are some dropper bottles I got off Amazon to more easily handle bleach.

Follow up on the gravity filter rig with 10" filter housing pictured above after a 20 day Grand trip.
With about 3' of siphon head and 1 micron depth filter it ran about 1 gpm. Just need two buckets, one to siphon from and the other to keep it filled. Would recommend 8' of hose. Mine was 6' and a little more would have been nice. But you don't need 50' with the 10" filter housing. I used 3/8" for the hose and fittings with bushings for the 1/2" filter connections.

We filtered about 100 gallons from side streams, the flow rate stayed good and nobody got sick. Simple, quick and effective.

When we got to National there was another group already there filtering 12 jugs with a battery pump system. We set up, filtered 8 jugs and left before they finished.
