Anyone ever had a broken humerus as an adult? If so, how long was your healing time?

Broke mine at 60 mph in a motorcycle accident, about a 3 inch diagonal break, yeah the bitch hurts.... but the bike survived, weird, eh?

6-8 weeks

bummer man, especially the amount of bad joke comments you are going to get for the next two months...ha ha...real funny.

i broke my right humerus clean in half, they squeezed it back together in a compression cast and i had to sleep upright for a week. after that, they took off the shoulder to wrist cast and just left me with a humerus wrap. much better because i really never got good at wiping my ass with my left hand.

8 weeks later i could shift from 2nd to 3rd...big accomplishment, and 10 weeks later i could mtn bike...mellow stuff.

hang in there

Sorry

Sorry to hear it Mike. Might be closer to the 9-10 week range even after the cast comes off. I"ve broken a few things and arms are not fun. Not using anything for 8+ weeks, and your muscles break down to nill. Henry would take you in an arm wrestling match, and you "would" be trying. It's time to cut back on the cigs and hammer some milk. Get healthy bro.

Glad to hear the injury wasn't worse. That sounds like a pretty serious accident. Hard to give a diagnosis I think without more information about the injury. It sounds like maybe it wasn't at a joint? If not that'll help out a lot.

Does it require surgery? Displacement? Recovery times can vary greatly. I'm not a medical person, but unfortunately I've gone through a broken arm before. 3 inches sounds like a pretty good break and I'd prepare for some down time if I were you. The guy above is right - expect an amazing amount of atrophy if you have to immobilize a joint for any significant period of time. If I were you, I'd definitely push for the shortest immobilization time possible if your doc will offer some leeway - tell him you're not a dipshit and won't go run out and play rugby on it.

Also, if you haven't definitely go see a good orthopedist, preferably someone with a specialty in upper limbs. My personal experience is that my injury was seriously undiagnosed at both the ER & by my general practitioner, who almost f-cked me over big time. I insisted on seeing an orthopedist who discovered my injury was much more extensive and required immediate surgery. Good luck.

well, they got me into a clamshell brace now, still on the oxycodone and valium. The latest xray showed it coming together a lot more. it definitely sucks, but at least I can flex my arm a bit. just got a nice $27k bill from the hospital.

I could have died in retrospect. tis something to think about.

Thanks Don! We all miss ya!
