Actually, they've been over 800cfs for the last week+, and went to 1100+ yesterday. Dug around and found this:

Aspinall Unit
Crystal Reservoir Releases - Revised
December 9, 2014

Releases from Crystal Dam will be increased from 800 cfs to 1100 cfs on Thursday, December 11th at 8:00 AM. This release increase is intended to lower the elevation in Blue Mesa Reservoir to the winter target of 7490 feet by December 31st. Flows in the lower Gunnison River are currently above the baseflow target of 1050 cfs. River flows are expected to stay above the baseflow target for the foreseeable future.

Pursuant to the Aspinall Unit Operations Record of Decision (ROD), the baseflow target in the lower Gunnison River, as measured at the Whitewater gage, is 1050 cfs for September through December.

Currently, diversions into the Gunnison Tunnel are zero and flows in the Gunnison River through the Black Canyon are around 850 cfs. After this release change Gunnison Tunnel diversions will still be zero and flows in the Gunnison River through the Black Canyon should be around 1150 cfs. Current flow information is obtained from provisional data that may undergo revision subsequent to review.

This scheduled release change is subject to changes in river flows and weather conditions.

Yea Mike I saw that flows were really great for this time of year, but there just isn't any sunlight in that gorge at all in the winter. The rapids are still pretty technical at 800 to 1000 and anykind of a swim would be rather chilly. This would have been the week to do it though, I mean mid 50's all week for middle of Dec., pretty toasty!! Hope to do some runs with you next year. We have a solid group of paddlers in Montrose, many of us are IK's. I'm very old school so actual chatting is preferred contact at 970-497-6512, would like a contact for you if you don't mind.

I ran it two years ago this week from Warner Route down, and we had six (yes, six) minutes of direct sunlight the whole first day. 5 of those were sitting in the eddy where Chukar Trail meets the river, soaking it in while we could.

So yeah, cold, but not unmanageable or unreasonable. You just gotta dress for it.

I'll make a note of your #, but I'm not much of a phone guy, for many reasons. Best bet to reach me is via good old fashioned email, which I check multiple times per day if I'm on the grid. mike dot curiak at gmail dot you-know-what.
