Oh Yeah! After years of trying everything under the sun (Chiro, PT, Injections, Needles, IMS, VooDoo, Accupuncture) I found that swimming laps one to two days a weeks finally solved the problem. No doctors and no copays needed. If you think about it, we spend 90% of the time sitting ( work, driving, kayaking, biking, etc). The swimming simply stretched everything out and strengthened core muscles. I am sure YOGA would help as well.
I compressed a vertebrae in my back a few years ago. It healed well (I think) but I have a lot of muscle issues around where I broke it. Haven't done a whole lot of extra rehab or medicinal work, but the more I stretch, and more importantly the more I stay in good physical condition the more I can do. I feel it everyday, but when I'm mtn biking or kayaking a lot it feels better. Sitting for a long time kills my back, but a day of construction work makes it feel great. Kind of weird. We'll see how I feel in another twenty years.
My back has been hurting ever since I wrecked my paraglider. A PT gove me the following exercise that, with time, has really helped.
Lay down on the floor flat on your stomach. you will end up doing 10 sets after the warm up. to warm up just arch your back and rest with your elbows and forearms on flat on the floor. After you warm up for a little then arch your back further by pressing your hands on the floor. Hold that stretch for about 10 seconds, breath, release, wait 10 seconds, do it again.
The PT told me to do this every few hours. What it is doing is the opposite of a toe touching stretch. All too often a disc is slightly out and this exersize helps move it back in.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I AM NOT A DOCTOR and who knows, you could fuck yourself up. But it worked for me.
If you don't have insurance, get some before you disclose this to any doc. Backs are expensive and insurance does not cover preexisting issues.
