Arkansas Info/beta

Hi all,

Despite being near my backyard, we've never done Arkansas, as we usually do multi-day trips. We have experience on Deso, Yampa, Ladore, San Juan, Delores, and main Salmon. No multi-day permits this year, so this summer, we'd like to do some day floats on the Arkansas in the BV/Salida area as we'll be camping up there and also doing hiking and other activities. We have a 14ft raft and a couple of duckys we can take.

Can anyone recommend fun, low-key stretches of the Arkansas in this area?

Thanks!

Browns is pretty mellow. Class 3 run. Even if you run to stone bridge siedels is a 4 barely. Stay out of the hole and your good.

Bighorn is mellow (not at high water). Class 3 run. Put in at pinnacle take out at parkdale.

There's always the milk run, town runs. I've never floated them so I don't know.

If your up for some fun the numbers is Class 4. And of course the royal gorge. AW counts it as a Class 3 run. I feel that's misleading. With your 14 footer all these runs are good for you. I'd start feeding you more info but I think these topics like water levels on certain runs have all been covered before besides I don't want to type that much out.
Not sure what type of crew you have. Browns is pool drop and you have some time to recover in between rapids(usually) but that’s flow dependent. Fractions and Numbers BV area is game on fast and consistent at near peak flows. The new Scout wave in town Salida was flipping fishing boats last weekend. Fun to watch at we surfed. Parkdale is a fun warm up. Three Rocks Spikebuck and Sharks tooth can be sketchy I would agree Royal Gorge is 3+ watch for rebar on river left after sunshine.
Sorry for derail, where is the something something “creek” section . That looks so burley? I’d like to come down this summer too!

You need to be.more specific about ----creek. I assume your talking about pine creek. It's just upstream from the numbers.
You can start with a run from Salida East to Rincon. That will give you a feel for the in between water on the ark. Progressing from that you'll head to Browns, big horn sheep canyon, royal gorge, numbers and then pine creek if you're really looking to get after it.

Yeah pine creek looks amazing! Thanks! Class4? Or a little 5?
For what it is worth, from a person who over the years has run from the numbers down to Canon City many times, I would take a close look at Pine Creek at any June level before launching on the run.

Pine Creek at July flows is a class 4 run. Make sure you start in Granite; that section is really fun!
