Pop-up pits meet all BLM and NPS requirements. When they were new to the scene a few rangers balked at it, but eventually were convinced. Now that they're so widespread, I haven't had any issues. If you have a fire blanket to place underneath it makes rangers a little more comfortable.
I've taken mine down the MFS and Lodore with no problem. I know they've been checked out by the GC rangers and passed too.
I agree that a fire blanket is key for them too. Most places require a fire blanket anyways...so it works. I bought mine with the heat shield...but basically never use it since so little actually gets through the mesh and what small amount that does just goes on the fire blanket.
