i'm thinking about going boating in ecuador this jan and i'm looking for advice and the name of a good guide book?

i've heard about "the kayaker's guide to ecuador" but are there better guide books out there?

any help or advice is gratefully excepted.

do you think there will be many boaters in ecuador in janaury? i was planning on going down there on my own, so i'll need some other boaters to go off with.

do people have any good tips on travelling down there?

I think there's a river/boating festival of some sort going on in Tena in January. I saw an advertisement in the American Whitewater magazine but don't have it with me.

When I was there a couple years ago there were plenty of boaters in the Tena area and with flyers out for a festival there should be more.

January in ecuador

I went to Ecuador in January last year and there were plenty of boaters. My advice to you is to fly into Quito, take a taxi to the magic bean hostel, this a really cool part of Quito with allot of international travelers. The hostel across the street from the magic bean, for the life of me I can't remember the name, you could email the magic bean and ask, is where I stayed, and thats where allot of boaters come in. The guy who owns it is American, and has a small boat shop in the lobby. I think small world has most of there guest fly in and stay here the first night if it's late. Great place to hook up, and get started. You can ask the owner questions and meet other kayaks taking off to tenna and beaza. Good luck in your travels. It's a great country with beautiful, awesome whitewater.

We hired a driver to get around the country, which is great because you have you shuttles set up. Ask when you get down there. It's really pretty easy, and the people are more than willing to help. If you have any more questions let me know.

The name of that hostel is Crossroad Hostal. You can email the owner if you want to make sure there'll be place for you. Nice place, and I liked it better than the Magic Bean, although that entire area of Quito is way touristy.
