Schutzie got back on the river

So most people around here know that while I was a dedicated guide for many years, along about 1978 I found a wonderful wife and what with life intruding I gave up rafting. Wasn't a conscious decision, it just sort of ended up that way.

So this weekend I took advantage of a memorial for Doc Baker up at the Gore range and got back on the river. For the first time in 30 years. Really.

I borrowed (OK, sort of stole) a rig from an unsuspecting friend and 7 of us, plus a little rat dog, set sail from the pump house with yours truly on the oars.

The consensus was that the old fart ought stay in camp and drink beer, but the old fart decided what the hell, he could drink beer just as easily with an oar locked under each knee.

Now, I wasn't worried about the river; I mean, it's the Gore range, and since I'd stolen the rig in the first place, I saw no liability from that angle.

The only concern I had was maybe my back would tolerate about 5 good pulls on the oars and then lock up on me. That would be embarrassing.

No problem. It all came back, just like riding a bike. in fact, it felt pretty damn good to be back on water again. My back even behaved for once.

A beautiful day. Not to hot, not to cold, nice water, fun rapids, no wind and cold beer and friends (and family) willing to risk life and limb to give the old fart one more adventure.

What the hell have I been thinking, leaving off such a grand adventure for 30 years?

So thank you River God for taking pity on an old fart, and for my friends who were willing to risk it with me.

And, my apologies to the little dog who was kidnapped and forced to ride along. You handled it like a trooper.

And Doc, wherever you are, RIP.

Good for you! You have too many good river stories to not spend time on the RIO.
