South Platte SUP Upstream of Bailey, CO - Fences?
Put in just past the dam, 8 miles upstream from Bailey.. intended to go all the way to the black rot-iron bridge in town. Made it about half way when a very angry man in a pick-up truck started yelling at me and saying that because I grazed this barbed wire fence strung across the water (there was about 8 inches of clearance and I'm reasonably sure I didn't, but whatever) I was trespassing. He owns a fly fishing ranch and claims I would ruin it for his guests. I wasn't loitering, or portaging (except for one man made obstacle) but he said I either had to get in his truck to be driven to public water or he'd call the police. I know the Colorado laws are a bit gray on this matter, I've seen ranchers fined for stringing barbed wire (Loveland) and course floaters fined for trespassing. Because I didn't feel like arguing and he didn't seem too threatening, I took his ride offer. I know there isn't a good answer to this problem yet, but just thought I'd share my story. I should probably point out that all in all the river wasn't really worth the trouble. It was a bit too shallow and I grazed alot of rocks (which apparently is also trespassing). I understand the dude's gripe but the massive quantity of barbed wire and fences across the river seems unsafe.
-Thanks for your time.
