I have a friend who has been doing R1 laps in his Mini-Max on Slaughterhouse on the Roaring Fork which is class IV and was just fine. Go for it and have fun!

I've been R-1ing for years, it is super fun and you don't have to find partners.
Start somewhere that you are comfortable, and use the current.

Practice catching eddies on both sides of the river, you will find that one side is easier than the other.

Also try to avoid wind, R-1ing into a headwind sucks.

Have fun.

A few tricks to R-1ing. Put a cooler or a dry bag with some weight in it, up front. I use to fill a dry bag with rocks. A 5 gallon water jug works good too.

Spin to win. Go with the flow. Use the eddies behind rocks to get where you want to go. When in doubt.....ghost boat it.

Minimax is the perfect R1 toy. Plus one on caverdan's advice: adding weight up front makes punching holes and staying straight easier; minimax's do not track well. Eddie hopping spin moves and having a good pry and draw strokes are game changers. R1 surfing really helped me figure out where to put my weight and how to use it.

R1 is so much fun because you get the whole boat to yourself. Dont stay glued to your spot...see a big hole, throw your weight towards the front when your bow is getting kicked towards the sky. Stuck in a surf...fantastic opportunity kick back on the down river tube and look cool before digging in and pulling your surprisingly light boat into the green water. You can use you inertia, moving around in the boat, to bouce off potential pins.
