Painted hypalon boat

A friend just bought a used hypalon boat that has been painted... Poorly.

In addition to being ugly, the geniuses tried patching the boat over the paint without removing the paint first... I removed one patch with my fingers.

I know we need to re-do all the patches and remove the paint from those areas (likely physical removal), but is there a hypalon-safe solvent we could use to remove this from the entire boat?

Depends on what the paint was.

If a solvent that dissolves paint but not hypalon, great.
If the solvent dissolves both, probably need to mechanically (sand) the paint off.

Sounds like gasoline, a match and a new raft should do it.

Yeah for sure... If it comes down to a question he'll just row an ugly boat.

The "solvent" you want to use on Hypalon is Toulene. You'll have to use some "elbow Grease" to work the solvent with. They go "hand in Hand" with each other.

Yep, toluene.
I’ve used it to at least remove paint meant for hypalon. Be careful with that stuff, respirator, chemical resistant gloves, and LOT’S of fresh air. You can soak the area first with a rag full of the stuff, to get the paint to start breaking down, but Try not to overdo the toluene, cause that will cause some amount of break down to the hypalon.

Good luck, keep in mind that shit is toxic, and causes nervous system damage, so balance looks of the raft, with brain cells remaining when finished!

I know about toluene for hypalon repair as a solvent... I would think that would be bad for the boat to use it anywhere I wasn't putting a patch, no?

It also may not work on the paint... And any damage to the rubber might not be noticeable until it fails.

I was really hoping there's a solvent that doesn't break down rubber but will break down paint.

I used it to remove the old company logo from my raft about 15 years ago, and have seen no deterioration in that spot. It CAN deteriorate the material if you over do it, but it seems to do fine, as long as you don't overdo it.
