New to Rafting-Looking for advice in a rig

I have a lot of whitewater kayaking experience...15+ years class 5 boating around US. I have 4kids that are of ages to get them into rafting. I have looked into Saturn, NRS, and RMR. Are there any other raft companies that I should add to my research? I plan on taking them down single day (mid Atlantic rivers) and 2-3 day (mid Atlantic and western rivers) trips. We have a minimalist attitude towards camping if that helps. Thanks in advance for the info!!

Since you mentioned a minimalist attitude towards camping, might want to read the
Saturn thread on this site. Have fun researching!

Dont overlook Avon, and Achilles. Both good solid boats.

Buy or make something from this side of the world

A raft is an air bladder and nothing more. There is nothing cool or sexy about riding in a commie air bladder.

Have a look at past threads to, on how to check out a used boat. There are some really solid ones out there at decent prices, if you know what to look for, if brand new doesn't suite your budget, you'll be spending a bunch on other gear besides the raft. Of course a brand new boat is awesome if you can swing it.

Wing used to make some really good boats, and has started making W.W. rafts again. It sounds like Star has improved there quality in recent years, and might be another one to ad to your list.

We bought a new 14' RMR last May. After a lot of research and searching for decent used or new boats it was the best decision!

They all will get the job done. Spend as much as you are comfortable doing. If you like rafting this will not be your last boat you buy. New great, used just be careful and pick carefully. There are tons of threads here on building your own gear, poverty boating, cheap ways to have fun. The hardest thing about rafting is getting permits.
Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life on or off the river. is offline   Reply With Quote
