Asphalt mess

The highway construction in Idaho this summer has been busier than ever. On some of the smaller highways, the lame resurfacing technique is "chip and seal." This involves countless sharp bits of rock and a whole lot of asphalt. The rocks break windshields, eat up tires, etc. The asphalt gets on everything. I know there is a tar remover for autos, but how do I get the nasty stuff off my beautiful raft?

When I was a kid we'd spend a bit of time each summer at the beach. When I would walk on top of the seawall or jetty on a hot day, the creosote and tar would stick to and cover our bare feet completely. Mom would never let us back in the house with tar covered feet, so she would always hand us a bottle of cooking oil and some paper towels and it worked like a champ to completey remove it from our feet. I have used this trick on other tar and mastic type substances and it works like a champ. Might try some sort of low potency oil in an out of the way spot (in case it stains) and see if it works.

Pizza.
Stumbled over this trick when a very nice customer of mine offered me a couple slices when i was repairing her house, and I had roofing tar on my hands. Cleaned it right Off!
So go out back, and take a slice of nice greasy pepperoni to it.
And if you ever need your house fixed, just remember, the way to a Contractors heart, and probably cheaper bill, is through there stomach!

Sorry for the weird post, I just take it out on Mountain Buzzers cause they're less likely to call the folks in the white lab coats.

I would try a little wd-40 on a paper towel for the mild oil solution. If we are talking about a PVC boat and all else failed, I would swap the wd for rubbing alcohol and then soap and water.

Thanks all, the advice was mostly good, and the canola oil I used did the trick. I steered clear of WD40 and Goof Off since both are petroleum products, and probably hard on the raft material
