As much as I love, and live, in the Rockies; and the MF Salmon perhaps being my greatest pleasure;;; the west slope of the Sierra's extending west into the Trinity/Illinois area is the most enjoyable/clearest water/most diverse WW of the southern 48. Not many multi-days but super special WW circumstances and pleasures.

This is my knee jerk response but I look forward to changing my opinion based on follow-ups to this thread.

Oh wait, sorry.. The water is always -30 degrees, the weather sucks, too many damn rocks in the river, yep, sucks hind tit here, better to go boat elsewhere !!
And 285 sucks on weekends. The the new I-70 but a 2 lane road. I live 5 miles off of 285. You get to play bumper boats on the Ark with all the commercial trips.

I cannot speak for the west...but Ron, I'll go ahead and throw Fayetteville, WV into the best in the lower 48 conversation. Of course for me their will never ne a better river town than my hometown area of Friendsville/ Deep Creek Lake/ Ohiopyle....within 45 mins theres five major whitewater-watersheds (Yough, Cheat, Savage, Potomac, Casselman).
