Smith River April 22

My buddy drew for April 22nd and invited me to go. Has anyone went this early? Heard they cancelled last year due to ice. Any chance that it's open this year?

Hard to say this far ahead. I've had beautiful weather that time of year, and seen the river frozen. If you go, bring lots of firewood!

I ran it mid april a few years back and got snowed on about a foot. The fishing was great and the levels were perfect. Pack for snow and rain. Big tarps and hard liquor will be your best friend at camp.

Everything is frozen over this year. Montana had one of the coldest Februaries on record and it still hasn't really warmed up to "normal" yet.

The NWS 90 day forecast has it leaning toward a warmer than normal spring, so maybe...

April SmithTrip

The weather that time of year really is a crap shoot. About five years ago I did an April 23 trip and hit the first warm 5-day period (65 degrees most days). The river was running about 180 CFS at launch and the fishing was amazing for the first three days. The warm weather brought the flows up to about 350. This year the Smith has good snow pack and is about 7% above normal. Hope you hit a sweet spot)

I think this year you’ll be fine as far as ice goes. This last week has really warmed up and it looks to continue. You very well could see a cold snap with rain and snow but the fishing will be good.

I'm launching 3 days before you. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, take what comes.

You should be somewhat concerned with the ice regarding your launch date. Still totally winter up here, and the river is frozen. First week of launches are shut down and most likely more to follow. Get a back plan going...

Probably looking at doing the NF of the flathead from Border down to Blankenship as a backup.
