More Lower Salmon questions...

Hey Buzzards:

MB newb here...looks like we're finally going to be able to run our first Lower Salmon trip in late August; really looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, the best we can do with juggling everyone's schedules is 4 days/3 nights on the river.
I've been perusing several threads, and it seems Hammer Creek to Heller Bar is doable in that time frame, but how much of a slog would it be? Better to start at Pine Bar? Not really interested in an Eagle Creek exit.
We made 20+ miles/day on the Deschutes last August without really trying, and 40 miles on the Rogue in the fall in 2.5 days (again, not a lot of effort). How does the Salmon/Snake current compare in late August?
We'll have a smallish group, probably one raft, a couple inflatable canoes, maybe an IK or hardshell. Don't mind several hours on the water, but don't want to be setting up camp in the dark, either. We'll be launching on a Sunday, so hopefully competition for camps won't be too fierce.

Thanks! And have a great float season.

Definitely doable, but you'll have some long days on the Salmon. Bring a motor for the Snake, the wind gets pushy. Putting in at Pine bar saves you most of the first day, but you'll still be working.

We often do three nights from Hammer Ck Labor day w/end BUT we use a motor on Snake Lake, many people row it but we haven't for years. I about lost the will to live a couple of years ago when we were all spread out before we linked up to motor out.

Done it a few times with 3 nights from Hammer to Heller at low august and september water without a motor. Very doable. As long as you camp at putin and launch in the morning. And camp about half way down from the mouth of the Salmon to Hellar (on the snake) your last night. Obviously a motor is better, but very doable without.

Yep. If you have everything set up and camp at HammerCreek

If you have it all set and can launch early on day 1 instead of the crack of noon club launch you should be good. We too motor out of the snake in Sept. We've had some serious head wind days down there so we were grateful. We always make it to Cottonwood Creek, camp there and then motor down to Heller.

Great trip, do it every september.

Thanks

Good feedback; appreciate it. Camping at Hammer Creek the night before is the plan. Gonna' have to motivate folks (including me) for early starts!

Late August on the Lower means early sun. I find few things get me motivated early as well as not wanting to break a sweat while breaking camp.
